This week we felt inspired to continue creating veggie soaps! They're so nourishing and it's fun to play with different purees. When I use a vegetable based soap, it feels like I'm giving my skin a healthy meal. This is the beginning of a series of fruits 'n veggies soaps that all contain raw fruit and veggie purees. (The first two were Avocado Mint and the Carrot Coconut Soap, which will be done curing in 4-6 weeks.) This weeks' soap contains raw tomato puree, tomato extracts, heavy whipping cream, and is scented with a really nice basil essential oil. It has an earthy and spicy aroma.
In skin care, tomatoes are known to shrink pores and revive your skin with its high vitamin content. It can be used to clear up rashes, acne, and other skin conditions. (A lot of these skin conditions arise as the result of a vitamin A deficiency! So feed your skin lots of carrots and tomatoes and other foods high in vitamin A.) I've even heard of people cutting a tomato in half and just rubbing it on their skin to brighten it up or to sooth a sunburn. Lycopene is one thing that really sets tomatoes apart from other veggies in the skin care department -- this antioxidant can fight cellular damage and radically reduce signs of aging. Tomato extracts are often used in luxurious massage oils to reduce stress on the skin.
I've read that consuming a lot of tomatoes makes your skin high in lycopene too. This makes it appear young and radiant and also makes you resistant to a lot of damage from the sun! Living in Hawaii, we are especially excited about that part. I need to eat way more tomatoes!
