Papayas grow all over the place here on the Big Island and can be commonly found in most local grocery stores and farmer's markets (and many are given freely with aloha by friends or neighbors whose backyards produce an abundance). The pulp of this "Fruit of the Angels" contains an enzyme called papain, which helps your body break down proteins when ingested and also happens to be really great for your skin. (Surprise!) This enzyme is why we've all seen so many papaya-centric dietary supplements, facial creams, and shampoos.
Thus, our inspiration continues with a papaya and coconut milk soap. The numerous health benefits of papayas have been known in Ayurvedic and folk medicines for centuries. It is believed that, when incorporated regularly into one's skin care practice, papaya may moisturize, brighten and smooth the skin, clear up blemishes and even skin tone, and reduce the appearance of age spots and wrinkles. Knowing this, throwing out my papaya skins almost seems like a waste.
In this soap, we've included a raw papaya puree, as well as a natural extract of the beneficial papaya enzymes. The liquid base is coconut milk (one of our personal favorites) and we've given the soap a really intoxicating fruity scent. Watch for this soap in the shop in 4-6 weeks - it is truly a tropical treat. :)
